As Founder’s Day approaches, and we celebrate the birthday of Scouting founder Baden Powell, we thought it might be the right time to answer one of SCOUTS SA’s most frequently asked questions, “Who is National?”
Most of us know the volunteers within our Scout Groups and Districts. We know who to go to with questions about the programme, a camp or a competition. But have you ever wondered who else is working tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure that our Scout programmes remain relevant, that our training takes place, that our applications are processed, and that organisation fulfils its legal obligations.

Some of SCOUTS SA’s National Team
The answer might not be what you expected as “National” is actually a big team of volunteers and a small staff contingent who work together to support all our Groups and members in living the Scout Experience.
So, who is this national team?
- The Scout Board and Manco (Management Committee): These are the individuals who oversee the direction and strategic goals of Scouting on a national level.
- Regional Commissioners and Regional Team Coordinators: The leaders who ensure Scouting’s presence and growth across various provinces, working closely with regional teams, Districts and Scout Groups to ensure that Scouting continues to operate locally so we can prepare children and youth for life.
- Regional Young Leaders: The passionate young Scouts who represent their peers and bring fresh ideas, energy, and perspectives into the leadership process.
- National and Regional office team: We are a volunteer driven organisation and therefore the office staff contingent is a small team of dedicated individuals who provide operational support, ensuring that our legal obligations as a non-profit organisation are met, and that Scouting members receive their programmes, can acquire their badges, certificates and more!
A team rooted in Scouting values
One of the most remarkable things about our national team is that many of them have grown up in Scouting themselves. Having held various roles throughout their journey—whether as a Scout or as a volunteer leader—they understand the importance of fostering growth and providing support at all levels.
Regardless of the role they hold within our team, every single national team member shares one thing in common: a deep commitment to upholding the core values of Scouting. Our values are the guiding principles that shape every decision.
Why Does This Matter?
The work our national team does can be seen throughout Scouting. From developing and refining our programmes, to developing training, aligning our organisation to sustainable development, and more. Through regular meetings, and by attending local events and competitions, the team tries to keep an ear on the ground to ensure that Groups can focus on “Scouting”, and they can offer the support needed.
So, when you think of Scouting and the fun that is had by all, let’s also remember that national is not a team of people far removed from where we are, let’s remember that behind every campfire, every badge earned, and every adventure completed, there is also a team of predominantly volunteers working hard to make it all possible.
